Rejoice! COVID-19 Restrictions Lifted!

Masks, facial coverings, and social distancing are no longer required to participate in worship services at the Red Brick Church, or in our offices and meting rooms in Price Hall.

The Cold Spring Presbyterian Church session unanimously lifted our COVID-19 restrictions following the recommendations of the CDC and New Jersey health officials, in consultation with the Presbytery for Southern New Jersey. Come and worship, mask-free!

Thank you for your diligence in following our safety protocols and requirements during the pandemic. It’s been a long wait for case counts and infection rates to decline, and vaccination rates to rise.

Now, let’s get together better and show God’s love to greater Cape May!

We are ready for you inside our historic, beautiful Red Brick Church or join us on YouTube Live!

Worship Preview- REsources foryour Lenten Adventure!

Everyone loves a good origin story, especially if it’s about food! While most of us grew up with Fig Newtons, did you know that it was the fig’s abundant vitamins that motivated a Philadelphia baker in 1851 to make a fig pastry? The first machine to produce enough fig pastries for wide distribution was invented in Newton, Massachusetts. To this day, Fig Newtons ranks among the most popular food treats! But more than just a delicious and nutritious snack, the fig tree is a frequent metaphor used in the Bible.

Figs feature first in the Garden in Eden. Could the tree planted in the middle of the Garden be a fig tree? Adam and Eve made coverings by sewing fig leaves together. In the Book of the Judges, there is even a story about a talking fig tree! (9:10-11). Fig trees were a sign of security and prosperity, too. Judgment was also represented by the fig tree, and a fig tree without fruit was compared to God’s people when they went their own way.

This week’s Gospel reading from Luke 13 features the fig tree that Jesus used in a parable to teach his followers about what it means to be his disciple. In the story, a particular fig tree Jesus passed by was not producing the expected fruit. But, instead of destroying the barren fig tree, the owner agreed to intervene and allow the fig tree to have one more year to produce fruit.

What intervention gave the fig tree (and us) hope to again produce good fruit? We will find out in the message this week, The Hopeful Fig Tree* (Fig Newton discipleship).

My Hope is Built on Nothing Less will be sung by Beverly Mate. This hymn reflects Jesus’ imagery that those who believe in him and act on that belief are like someone who builds a house on a rock.

Following the message, our music video echos the beginning of our Old Testament reading from Isaiah 55:1-7. All Who Are Thirsty reminds us of the deep hunger and thirst for spiritual meaning in our lives. Filling that void, we would never be satisfied. But Jesus gives us the answer. Come Lord Jesus come! Come to Jesus, drink of him, believe in him, and he will satisfy us through the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

We close our worship singing Hear the Good News of Salvation. This text was written by John B. Renville, the first Native American Dakota to be ordained to the Presbyterian ministry,. It was published in the Dakota hymnal he edited.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcomed at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

Enjoy sitting with others from greater Cape May as we worship together. We simplified our service and made it even easier to participate, with our Worship Guide and lyric videos displayed on a large screen.

Whew! At last. We can finally remove the protective coverings from our faces. Masks kept us safe for almost two years of the pandemic. Thank God that scientists and health workers did not give up on developing protective vaccines, creating treatments, and urging all of us to do our part in keeping others safe. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who stayed with it. We stuck with safety protocols that brought us to this time. We remove our masks and joyfully return to Sunday worship in the Red Brick Church with cautious optimism. Come, and celebrate! But wait, there’s more!

We can grow weary in doing good. We are fatigued by the pandemic, wars, injustice of every kind, struggling to make ends meet as we try our best to hold things together. We have good news for you! This week see God’s staying power at work in the life of Abram, who was exhausted and desperate for something better. You will want to hear the pastor’s message about one of the most dramatic and shocking episodes recorded in the Bible! Be as astounded as Abram when he realized that God does not walk away. God does not leave the room. God keeps promises. No matter what!

As our Lenten adventure continues, we will enjoy the Rev. Larry Moyer singing “Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days,” written by English hymn writer Claudia Frances Hernaman. It is about the temptation of Jesus found in three Gospels. First published in 1873 in “The Child’s Book of Praise,” hymnals did not include it until 1964. By the 1970s, it became a popular hymn in most congregations in the United States.

Following the message, we will enjoy the music video “Pass the Promise,” a new anthem we hope everyone finds easy to sing. In 2020, musicians Keith and Kristyn Getty traced their journey back to Northern Ireland and the Scots-Irish-American roots of their hymn writing. That experience shaped the direction of their recent album, “Confessio—Irish American Roots,” which includes “Pass the Promise.”

We conclude worship singing the first verse of “Be Still My Soul,” adding additional lyrics written by the Rev. Carolyn Winfrey Gillette in response to the crisis in Ukraine. The song affirms our promise to love God and others as “We Pray for Peace.”

Why do so many Biblical heroes end up in the wilderness? While humanity started in a garden, Adam and Eve ended up in the wild. Jacob, Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, and the Apostle Paul, to name a few, all had wilderness experiences, too. Oh, and of course, Jesus! Our Lenten Adventure begins with Jesus, where the wild things are. Yikes! But we will discover that God is present with us. Even when our happy plans are encroached upon by unexpected perils. Though our resources run out and unexpected obstacles make the way unbearable, God provides a way where there is no way. Do you ever feel you’re in the wilderness? Sure, we all do, at least from time to time. This Sunday, find wilderness tools for the Lenten Adventure. There is a place for you here! Let’s begin together. Welcome to your Lenten Adventure at Cold Spring Church.

Our worship experience this week features a solo by Beverly Mate titled “Lord Jesus, You Shall Be My Song.” Initially written in French, this text reflects the ministry of a religious community, the Little Sisters of Jesus, who work with people on the margins of society. This hymn is also loved by the Ark (L’Arche) communities who minister to differently-abled adults.

We will enjoy “As The Deer,” written in 1981, one of the most popular songs in the contemporary Christian musical (CCM) genre written by Martin J. Nystrom, a native of Seattle, Washington. After paraphrasing the first verse of Psalm 42, the song reflects on this passage, continuing in the first-person perspective of the psalm, inviting all of us to affirm: You alone are my heart’s desire, and I long to worship you.

As we celebrate around the Lord’s Table, we will sing “Blessed Jesus, Living Bread.” Our worship concludes with the Gospel reading set to the tune, “Lead On O King Eternal,” with the lyrics to the Carolyn Gillette hymn, “O Lord, the Spirit Led You.”

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Worship Preview- Special Lenten service, ashes, music, and message!

Our neighbors are feeling more and more like strangers to one another and more isolated since the pandemic began. People report loneliness as a persistent experience more than 70% of the time. How can we turn strangers into friends? How can our places of mission and worship become more welcoming? Let’s realize that others are as awkward as we may be! During the next 40 days be open to new ways to turn strangers into fellow travelers, companions, friends, to embrace God’s emerging future that leads to the cross and the empty tomb. Here’s how scripture puts Lenten advice: “Don’t be a mean-faced people, cruel to grandmothers and babies alike” (Deut. 28:50). But, “Do be a place where the face of God can smile on others” (Num. 23:5). This week we are putting on the Face of Grace for greater Cape May!

As you depart, you will find a pile of stones. Choose one to represent your burdens, your weights and fears, your regrets, and remember as you carry this stone with you, that on Easter, at the end of the Lenten Adventure, the Stone and all our stones were rolled away!

Lenten Steps: Honestly. Let’s ask ourselves…

What face does your neighborhood need to see in you today?

How will you put on the Face of Grace during the next 40 days?

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Physical distancing and masks are required, even for fully vaccinated worshippers. Thank you for helping us all stay safe.

Worship Preview- Gather to be spiritually energized! Ordination and Installation of new Ruling Elders and Deacons! Great music and message!

State by state, county by county, and school board by school board, something is changing. Businesses large and small are all considering change…reducing or eliminating mandated COVID-19 restrictions. (At last!) In the next few weeks, Cold Spring Church will be considering reduced restrictions, too, because case counts and hospitalizations are dropping. We are all ready for change, some desperately ready for a great change! 2022 is the year of Great Expectations here at Cold Spring Church. So, besides feeling more comfortable as we anticipate fewer restrictions, what kind of real change are you looking for right now?

Are you looking for information? Reformation? Restoration? Transformation? All of these “_____ations” sound good. But, Jesus did not come to inform us. Jesus didn’t come to reform or restore us. As amazing as our transformation journey continues to be, Jesus did not even come to transform us. What? Sounds shocking?! But the Good News is that Jesus came to transfigure us! That’s right. Transfiguration is God’s business. Find out how the old things can get out of your way to welcome the new in Christ! You can know the transfiguration of the Spirit when we meet God without a mask, no veil to block God’s love.

Come to worship with your neighbors at Cold Spring Church and see why transformation is just outside-in (think caterpillar spins a cocoon). Don’t settle for transformation, but transfiguration, inside-out (think chrysalis into a butterfly). Christ in you in the transfiguring hope of glory initiating real change and spiritual vitality. Find out how you can go from outside-in to inside-out as you live the real presence of Jesus in the world.

We will enjoy a solo titled “My Heavenly Father Watches Over Me” by the Rev. Larry Moyer who is our worship leader this week. Our first hymn, “The Church’s One Foundation” is one of twelve written by an English curate to affirm the articles of the Apostles’ Creed with biblical allusions such as 1 Corinthians 3:11. Though not created for this text, the tune was joined to it in 1868, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Our sending hymn is “Be Thou My Vision” with stanzas selected from a 20th-century English poetic version of an Irish monastic prayer dating to the 10th century or before. They are set to an Irish folk melody that has proved popular and easily sung despite its lack of repetition and its wide range.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

All of us want to invest in worthwhile activities. We make plans and sacrifices that better prepare us for a range of eventualities. When we feel our best, energized in mind, body, and spirit, we become internally motivated to move forward. We tend to take better care of ourselves, make wiser decisions, and gain increased capacity to treat others with respect, grace, and love. When we are at our best, we gain insight and perspective about yesterday and the courage to lay aside every encumbrance. We embrace the future fueled by genuine hope. But the inverse is also true. Fear, worry, and doubt reduce our faith when we are not feeling our best. We find ourselves more isolated, critical and judging. There is a climate of rushing to judgment, a lack of compassion, understanding, and forgiveness. There is a better way. Invest in the future. But how? Think about a time you have received mercy and forgiveness. Was it unexpected? Did being loved, forgiven, and understood help you in return to be more loving, forgiving, and understanding? This Sunday, find out how Joseph found hope through forgiveness and why Jesus challenged the crowds to find a future through mercy.

We will enjoy a music solo from Barbara Cain titled, “With All My Heart,” written by Sally DeFord to encourage children to love God with all their heart, might, mind, and strength based on Jesus’ words from Mark 12:30. Imagine that your life is composed of different rooms in a house. Rooms to relax in. Rooms to eat in. Places to exercise, and another to enjoy a hobby. In these Pandemic times, we may have co-opted a room to a new purpose or even built an addition to accommodate work or play, making things, or preparing resources from inside to share with others outside in the neighborhood. In the book, The Traveler’s Gift (2002), Andy Andrew tells about a room called Never Was. He calls it a giant warehouse of a room that holds all of the things God was ready to deliver to people, had they only expected great things a moment longer. For many of us, the Never Was room is the largest room in our house. A space of lost possibilities and neglected opportunities. It doesn’t have to be that way. How can we turn our Never Was room into a room of Great Expectations?

We will hear Jesus proclaim great expectations (and spiritual empowerment) to be authentic humans! Blessed are the poor and hungry, who weep and feel persecution because joy is ahead! Be courageous! We will invite Jesus into our home, our lives, and hear the words of the prophet Jeremiah when he spoke about God’s hope. God wants us to be strong and believe that blessings are ahead. Are you looking for something grand in 2022? Do you need resources to move your hopes and dreams from Never Was to Great Expectations? The blessings Jesus gives are for everyone, especially those who don’t feel blessed or feel they deserve to be blessed, the hungry, the poor, and those who are cast aside by others. Everybody will receive God’s blessings as we live more like Jesus!

After the pastor’s welcome, we will watch a mini-movie, Be Strong and Courageous, reinforcing our theme, God Is For You, in 2022. We will also enjoy singing two favorite hymns during worship, beginning with a music lyric video of Standing On the Promises. Perhaps because this hymn is so well known, its language sounds vaguely scriptural; but while there are various biblical uses of “stand” and “promise(s),” the two words are never combined. The confidence here is similar to that of “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less.”

The organ will lead us in singing Give to the Winds Thy Fears just before the Benediction. This text uses selected stanzas from sixteen four-line English stanzas. It forms an acrostic based on Martin Luther’s translation of Psalm 37:5, a reminder to be courageous as we follow Jesus.

Worship Preview

We will gather around the Lord’s Table this week, and all are encouraged to remain for our Annual Congregational Meeting to follow.

Our collective spiritual arms are outstretched, and our hearts are open for new blessings that God has prepared for us to receive in 2022! Great Expectations is our theme for 2022 that will guide our worship and mission. Pastor Kevin’s message, What’s In Your Charter? takes us to Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth, which didn’t have the best of reputations. Great expectations from there? For example, when Nathaniel realized that Jesus came from Nazareth, he scornfully remarked to his brother Philip, “Can anything good come from there?” (John 1:46). Not likely, you might think. The religious leaders seemed to agree. They were so upset with Jesus’ personal Messiah claims and who God would bless in the future that they tried to… well, come to worship on Sunday and see what happened for yourself! We consider how Jesus was treated, and more importantly, why. What are Jesus’ great expectations of you? You be the judge.

Music Preview

Our service music begins with the Rev. Larry Moyer singing an a cappella solo of Amazing Grace, and we’ll enjoy his beautiful baritone voice.

Following Rev. Kevin Yoho’s message we will sing, “Take My Life, and Let it Be,” a hymn written by Francis Havergal. It is a testament to her dedication to the Lord as she begins each line of the hymn with “take,” meaning something freely offered in service to God.

Mr. Schutte was a 31-year-old Jesuit studying theology in Berkeley, Calif., when one of his friends asked him to write a song for an upcoming diaconate ordination service. “I sort of had to catch my breath, because he was knocking on my door on Wednesday and I knew the ordination was on Saturday.” On top of the short notice, Mr. Schutte had been suffering from the flu for several days. He sat at his desk with his guitar and a blank sheet of staff paper in front of him, praying, “God, if I’m going to do this for my friend, you’re going to have to help me.” He never imagined his song, and our closing hymn, “Here I Am, Lord,” would become so popular.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Physical distancing and masks are required, even for fully vaccinated worshippers. Thank you for helping us all stay safe.

Hello, friends.

In the future, when asked to recall the worst year ever, there is no doubt that 2020 would be our #1 choice! But now, with the continuing COVID-19 pandemic with its variants including Delta and Omicron, 2021 will, unfortunately, be a close #2 choice. Thank you for being a part of our community and generously supporting our ministry through it all! It’s been a tough twenty-four months.

2021 In Review

We were saddened by the passing of several members and friends. We thank God for the Rev. Carlene Moyer, John Alves, Martin Bowne, Bess Lapsley, and James McNelly, in addition to other family and friends of our congregation. We celebrate their lives and mourn their passing. Since the pandemic, a few longtime members sadly moved or drifted away from Cold Spring. A good many of us continue to enjoy the comfort and relative safety of worshipping from home by visiting our YouTube channel (www.coldspringworship.com). Finding new ways to stay in touch includes our Facebook page and especially reading the weekly Connections, our emailed newsletter. We pray for each other by posting requests online (www.coldspringchurch.com/prayer). We have generously supported the ministry, with more of us giving online (www.coldspringchurch.com/giving). Thank you!

God has added to our numbers in the most delightful ways in 2021! We welcomed ten (10) new members, many initially connecting to us through Worship Online! These friends completed the Explorers’ Group new member orientation offered by Pastor Kevin via Zoom. A 2022 Members and Friends Directory is being compiled. It will be distributed on January 30 to help us stay in touch.

Great Expectations Ahead

With our collective spiritual arms outstretched and hearts open, we will position ourselves for new blessings God has prepared for us to receive in 2022! Great Expectations is our theme for 2022 that will guide our worship and mission.

God has called Cold Spring Presbyterian Church to expect great things from God and do great things together through Christ. Now is the time as we begin our 308th year of ministry. We are spiritually ready, asking God for the resources we need to serve the community even more.

As you read through the Annual Report, remember that all of us, each in our own way, are fully engaged in God’s year of Great Expectations.

God is for YOU in 2022!

“For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Get Ready for God’s Great Expectations For You in 2022!

“Believe me: I am in my Father and my Father is in me. If you can’t believe that, believe what you see—these works. The person who trusts me will not only do what I’m doing but even greater things, because I, on my way to the Father, am giving you the same work to do that I’ve been doing. You can count on it. From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I’ll do it. That’s how the Father will be seen for who he is in the Son. I mean it. Whatever you request in this way, I’ll do (John 14:11-14).

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. Glory to God in the church! Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus! Glory down all the generations! Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes! (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Sincerely,

Pastor Kevin
