Cold Spring Church has been at the crossroads of our community for more than 300 years, and Intersections is our blog of engaging ideas designed to get you connected to what matters to you!

Live Here. Grow Here. Give Here. #GivingTuesday 2021

By Intersections

We are overwhelmed by advertising promotions, deals, and special offers in the weeks before Black Friday in the United States. While a wise consumer can take advantage of real discounts, we must be careful because the “savings” can add to more spending. This year the amount spent on Black Friday is estimated to be around $700 per person, followed by Cyber Monday that could double that amount! Good stewards are all about good decision-making, but our stewardship is not just about “saving” money. It’s about “investing” our resources in meaningful endeavors and organizations, too.

Please take a minute to visit www.coldspringchurch.com/giving . Clicking the green tithe.ly button takes you to our easy and secure way to help us make a difference in our community this year!

Thank you!

We welcome back to the pulpit, ruling elder Mr. Norris Clark while Pastor Kevin and Melissa are on vacation. After our energizing Countdown Video, our first hymn is O Lord My God (How Great Thou Art). This tuneful retelling of the salvation story began in Swedish and was translated into German and Russian before reaching its English form. Truly an international hymn of praise! Despite such linguistic and musical revisions, it continues to be a meaningful source of comfort to many people.

Our second hymn is Blessed Assurance. Sometimes this prolific 19th-century hymn writer Fanny Jane Crosby wrote texts for others to set, and sometimes she created words for music others had composed. This text was of the second kind, and the resulting close fit between words and music has made them both popular and inseparable.

Come and worship!

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Due to the spike in cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in Cape May County, masks are again required, even for fully vaccinated worshippers.

November 7th promises to be a fantastic Sunday! Why? Because we are celebrating both sacraments, the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and the Sacrament of Baptism. The first sacrament invites the community of faith to gather at the Table to nourish the Spirit. As with the Lord’s Supper, Baptism is a sign and act of God’s self-giving, by which God’s grace is made available to us. The sacraments give a distinctive shape to our worship and are the primary signs of the covenant of grace. As the faith community gathers with the family at the Font, we affirm the promises of God. And we promise to nurture the parents and the child presented for baptism.

Throughout Scripture, the litmus test for loyalty as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ is this: How do we treat the poor and vulnerable? How do we care for the least of these? Our Gospel text from Mark 12 tells when Jesus noticed who dropped two small coins in the offering box. The giver was a poor woman compared to wealthy religious leaders who “devoured widows’ houses.” Jesus was on a mission to end a corrupt system, not merely draw attention to the widow as an example to follow. Instead, we will see that Jesus wants us to notice the oppressed, neglected, vulnerable, and those who have nothing left. We will discover why this woman was poor and vulnerable how God calls us to make decisions rooted in grace and gratitude and our two sacraments of Table and Font.

Our lyric video hymn, Help Us Accept Each Other, was written by Frederik Herman Kaan (1929-2009), born in the Netherlands. He wrote this hymn on acceptance in 1974 after reading a Bible-study article written by Jacki Mattonen, a member of the executive committee on the World Alliance of Reformed Churches.  It was published in the World Council of Churches hymnal, Cantate Domino (1974), when it was the perfect length to complete the available space left before printing and has become widely used in community services.

Blessed Jesus, Living Bread sings of the many ways we are nourished and fed as a body of believers. From God providing physical sustenance in the Old Testament in mana from heaven to the spiritual substance of God’s Word in the Bible.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

This week our worship experience is rooted in the great Protestant Reformation when we celebrate the courage and faith of German monk Martin Luther. Beginning in 1517, Luther and many other women and men challenged the Church to get back to life’s basics and the spiritual heart of the matter: Christ alone, Scripture alone, and Faith alone. We are delighted to welcome back to the pulpit this week the Rev. Larry Moyer while Pastor Kevin and Melissa are away. Let’s be open to God’s love and the transformational relationship God desires with us in mind, body, and spirit, the very essence of who we are. Invite a friend to worship with you as we get to the heart of the matter together.

What’s holding you back? Holding you from living your very best life? Holding you back from what is calling you forward into a hopeful future? This week we will meet a man named Bart, for short, who was held back by many things that constrained him. That is, until Jesus called him. Jesus calls each of us. Jesus calls us by name and gives us the courage and the power to cast aside whatever it is that has been holding us back. Hear the voice of Jesus as you leave what holds you back behind and to run unhindered into a future of hope.

We begin worship with To God Be the Glory, an American gospel song that became popular in England in the late 19th century, then returned to this country in the mid-20th century with the Billy Graham crusades. Its popularity may well be due to its simple focus on the praise of God

Our closing song is Will You Come and Follow Me (The Summons) the title echoing Jesus’ invitation to Bartimaeus in today’s Gospel. The first four stanzas of this Scottish melody are understood to be in the voice of Christ, with the fifth reflecting the individual singer’s response.

Worship, Music, and Message theme:

Who’s the greatest of them all? The acronym G.O.A.T. is online shorthand when enthusiastically advancing the athlete, performer, or celebrity you think is the Greatest Of All Time in their category. Who doesn’t want to be great Aspiring to being great can be a positive driving force to improve our attributes, skills, and competencies. Entertainment, business, science, education and sports have all developed metrics to measure and evaluate the relative greatness of our own progress, between competing people, or competing ideas and methods. But there’s also a dark side to greatness. Seeking to be great can also be rooted in an unhealthy ego and lead to behaviors of superiority, or even abuse. You no doubt can think of numerous examples past and present of the constructive and destructive aspects of our pursuit of greatness. Do you think our culture is obsessed with greatness? Are you? What do you think is missing or present in a person’s life that makes them greatness obsessed? This week in our message from God’s word, the followers of Jesus aspire to the title, G.O.A.T. Find out how Jesus reframed their aspirations of greatness. (Jesus is the greatest, and wants us to be great in this one area of our lives, too. Find out this week!)

Be with us in person or join us on YouTube Live when our community of faith gathers for worship and gains spiritual insight and spiritual resources to be great in spirit, and spiritual intelligence.

Music Preview- Our video hymn this week The Servant King was Graham Kendrick’s most popular song and is still one of the top 10 songs in the CCL (Church Copyright License).the song illustrates Graham’s willingness to research a theme using concordances, commentaries and other biblical research tools. He found the theme very inspiring:

‘It was a challenge to explore the vision of Christ as the servant who would wash the disciples’ feet but who was also the Creator of the universe.’

We close the service with Make Me a Servant. Composer Kelly Willard says she “was at home, and the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart saying very gently, “You know, you could stand to have a little more of a servant heart.” I went straight to my piano and began playing and singing this prayer.”

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Worship, Music, and Message theme:

Do you have a large walk-in closet or shed that you can’t fit one more thing into? Or a “two-car” garage that now can only hold one car, barely? Now it’s a one-car garage only if you know just how to slide it in-between the lawnmower, snow blower, and the never ending boxes of stuff. Maybe you needed more space in your home office but the extra desk, drawers, and shelves, well, they’ve reached their capacity, already. Many of us have an accumulation problem, as seen in yet another storage facility opening nearby.

Some items in our life are enjoyable, aspirational, inspirational, essential, connectional, functional, or they are just special and we just have an emotional attachment to them. From personal devices like watches, phones, and other technologies, to cherished mementos, Jesus knows how much we like or need to collect “stuff.” This week, we meet someone who for all the stuff he had, it just wasn’t enough. Enough, that is, to see what he truly needed. Plan to be with us in person or join us on YouTube Live when our community of faith gathers for worship and gains spiritual insight on the difference between the disposable and the eternal treasure that is worth gaining and keeping.

This week we will enjoy a solo by Barbara Cain with Jayne McDonough titled, Lord, What Must We Do?, to the tune of O Worship the King, All Glorious Above. Our first hymn is a contemporary piece titled I Have Decided. Both pieces reinforce our theme of making good decisions and not turning back when Jesus calls us forward. We close worship with two stanzas of Take My Life and Let It Be.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Gathering At the Lord’s Table

Our in-person worshippers will be provided pre-packaged communion cups, which on-line worshippers may request by contacting the office. Or, you choose the bread. For the cup, you may use grape juice or wine, or water, remembering that Christ is the Living Water for all.

Worship and Message theme:

On World Communion Sunday, we celebrate the image of God in all of us! Images fill our world. From social media memes and Instagram to TikTok videos, images dominate our senses. Our brain interprets images much faster than hearing words and much, much faster than reading text.

We are created in the image of God. Jesus knew how important image was, too, because image is not merely what is observed on the outside of something, or someone. An image represents (literally, re-presents) the core purpose, values, essence and essential content of what is described. The apostle Paul spoke of Christ as the image-bearer of God when he wrote, “…Look at the Son and see the God who cannot be seen… Look at the Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created” (Col. 1:15-16). “Jesus is the exact image, imprint, of God” (Hebrews 1:3). When Jesus’ followers asked to see God Jesus replied, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:5).

In Pastor Kevin’s message, “Image IS Everything,” we will explore how Jesus’ response to his political and religious climate resulted in a reframing of what we see, and how we regard others regardless of their age. How we can reflect God’s image in our own life? Whose image do you reveal? How is your core purpose displayed? How do you prove God’s presence in your life? The power of God’s image will inspire you!

Music Preview:

Our music this week will celebrate God’s true image of grace and love. While our Worship Online community can sing freely as they wish, we realize its a challenge to fully enjoy music in-person with our masks on. We appreciate the ways our growing number of in-person worshippers have been experimenting and learning new ways to worship within the safety constraints of the pandemic. However you enjoy our songs, hymns, and spiritual songs, we make music to the Lord together (Ephesians 5:19).

We begin worship with an inspiring song by We Are Messengers titled Image of God reflecting on how seven billion people across the planet share common experiences, and even more importantly, are all equally made in the image of God. Beverly Mate’s solo reminds us that we join Jesus’ mission to people of all ages titled, Do Not Turn Away the Children.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Do you know what time it is? Sure, your watch will tell you the time, but time itself? What is it? Time is simply a measure of distance. Time is life itself that passes along. It is not a tangible thing, time measures tangible things. \Time does not stand still. It is not a commodity to be held, set aside, or saved. Time cannot be stored. Nor can it be ignored. It cannot be spent, or lost. Time cannot be our enemy, or be “on our side.” There are no more hours in your day than in any other’s day. While we often feel pressure when “running out of time,” or impatient “waiting our time,” time is simply the unit we use to track and measure  experience, movement, and growth, that is, life Time is a way to measure our life. How does your life measure up?

This week, we celebrate God’s creative power and involvement in our lives through Jesus Christ. We begin with a hero story about Queen Esther who saved her people from the scoundrel, Haman. “For such a time as this,” Esther said, I have been put right where I am!” She decided now is the time to take a step of faith and courage.

Leaving the Queen’s story, our Scripture readings teleport us 500 years  when we will hear Jesus tell his followers not to interfere when other’s do God’s work even if they are not part of their group. In fact, we should welcome them. Everyone can live and share the Good News. With Queen Esther and the disciples of Jesus, seriously, now is the time for living! Yes, now!

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Humans have always been mobile. Like God said, “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” We certainly have. Our personal and global history bears witness to our mobility from our first crawl to walking, running, our first bike and first car. as we expand throughout our planet. We take walks on the beach or paths in the mountains. Collectively we have walked on the moon, sent spacecraft far out beyond our solar system and just this week four civilians were launched into a three-day orbit around our planet.

Jesus was always on the move, too. This week we take a walk with Jesus and his disciples when he reminds us that we must all be as children, welcoming of God’s love and welcoming of all others, too. You want to be the best? Be the servant of all. As we grow older, we are still on the move physically and mentally. The worship theme this week is no one is left behind. In what way do we stay mobile, growing and learning, spiritually?

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

We are excited to welcome to worship all who are able and comfortable in-person in our historic Red Brick Church on Sundays at 10:30 AM. Your safety, health, and wellness are our top priority.
