As we observe Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifice our greater community has made in ensuring our freedom. We have planned a very special Memorial Day and Trinity Sunday worship on May 30! As we eagerly anticipate diminishing social restrictions and increasing numbers of vaccinated people, God is present with us, offering hope as we adjust to a new normal. But what is normal? Can we choose better than normal? For followers of Jesus, we must not become so comfortable that we ignore the unpredictable movement of the Spirit! Our neighbors, nation and the world need hope, too. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, life is far from predictable! In fact, we can choose the abundant Spirit-Life and be amazed!

We remember the sacrifices of those who have died serving our country, let’s remember that our country sacrificed not only for our nation’s freedoms, but we have always sacrificed so that others around the world could experience freedom, too. God loves you more than you know. Jesus said, “There is no greater love than this, that one lays down their life for another.” God so loved the world!

What do you remember about this Memorial Day? Give thanks to God for freedoms here at home and around the world. For freedom in Christ! God is shining on you! That is something to remember every day!

Thinkable for this week: Sometimes, we may think God is frowning on us. But the Good News is that in Jesus Christ, God’s love, forgiveness, and hope set us free!

  1. How do you experience God’s smile?
  2. What new blessings do you want to thank God for right now?
  3. In what ways does your life shine on others? What will you do today to let your light shine even more!

Connect to the flame of the Spirit during the season of Pentecost at Cold Spring Church.

Worship Your Way! In-Person, or Online

While we continue to worship online every week, we are excited to welcome all who are able and comfortable to worship in-person in our historic Red Brick Church on Sundays at 10:30 AM. Your safety, health, and wellness are our top priority. West Jersey Presbytery approved our session’s re-opening plan and our pastor, staff, and teams have worked hard to prepare for your arrival. Following the guidance from the CDC and health officials, we have implemented safety protocols and designed an approximately thirty-minute worship experience that will be spiritually energizing and safe for you, your family, and other worshippers.

Dear online worshipping friends: We apologize in advance should our live stream be interrupted by Facebook. We are working with Facebook and the music publishers to honor our music licenses and resolve these disconnect issues. Any interrupted live stream will be re-launched within a minute or two. Please rejoin as soon as we are back! Thank you for your patience. Pre-registration for in-person worship is encouraged but not required to attend worship. If you’d like to worship in person, you may contact the office at 609-884-4065 or email hello@coldspringchurch.com.

What does Pentecost mean? An even better question to consider is, What does Pentecost mean to you? The whole point of Pentecost is that when the flame of the Spirit descended upon the followers of Jesus, the flame never went out. Pentecost is not just the Church’s birthday, it’s the launch of a movement of the people of God to make a difference in the world, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord‘s favor, which is always now!

How do we know the Spirit is moving? You can’t see the Spirit, right? But you can see what the Spirit does, at work in and around us! Each of us uniquely demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. God’s Spirit is moving throughout the world and since Pentecost, through the lives of those who follow Jesus. As we grow and transform, we will make a difference in the world in ways that only the Church can deliver. Here in Cape May, New Jersey, and in every city in America, throughout the world. Connect to the flame of the Spirit at Cold Spring Church.

Become a part of Jesus’ cosmic story this week at the Red Brick Church. Enlarge your spiritual world and be better equipped to enjoy God and connect to God’s earthly and cosmic mission which includes you and me! We will start with prayer.

While we call the “Our Father” the Lord’s Prayer, it actually wasn’t. Jesus taught that prayer, but it was to be a model of prayer for the disciples of Jesus. (Idea: When you say the prayer during worship today, think: this is the disciple’s prayer, my prayer, so make it yours!) Jesus told his followers that God sent him to be in the world, and that Jesus was sending us into the world, too. What did Jesus mean when he said to be all in? To help us explore our faith and ramp-up our mission we will consider the expanding group of disciples after Jesus ascended into heaven. Consider words from Colossians 1 that the earthly Jesus has a cosmic role!

“Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers–all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col. 1:15-17).

To prepare for our worship together think about your responses to these questions: What’s the difference between being an astronomer and an astronaut? How do these metaphors help you understand being “all in” as a follower of Jesus?

You’ll want to bring along a few traveling companions to worship with you, too!

This Sunday, we commemorate Mother’s Day and celebrate God’s love when Jesus’ chose us! (Special music, message, and a gift for our in-person worshippers.) Honoring motherhood has a long history from the earliest of times. Our Mother’s Day tradition is mainly attributed to Anna Jarvis. She worked tirelessly honoring a mother’s sacrifice in caring for children following her own mother’s death on the second Sunday of May in 1905. In 1908, thousands of people attended a Mother’s Day event financed by Presbyterian and Philadelphia department store owner John Wanamaker at one of his retail stores in Philadelphia. It didn’t take long for Mother’s Day celebrations to become a commercial success when florists, greeting card manufacturers, and retail stores joined in its promotion.

God knows our hearts and our heartaches this Mother’s Day. As others rightfully celebrate the joy and love of the mothers in their lives, this day, for some of us, is a sad reminder of a mother’s absence in our lives. If we buy flowers today, it may only be to place them by a graveside. If we buy a card today, it could only be in hopes of knowing our mothers one day. Some simply miss our mom’s hugs prevented by travel and health restrictions, something Facebook or FaceTime connections just can’t replace. Others grieve strained relationships. Many will light a candle in honor of a mother who is not locally present or who has passed, long ago or more recently. For some, this Mother’s Day will be joyful. Others are tearful. For some wistful, or it will just be a day that feels empty.

But God comforts us like a mother. God’s Spirit meets us where we are. Let’s honor the mothers that we knew, those we are blessed to know, or the mothers that we hope for. God’s love shared in our hearts and with others can remind us of the abundant life, love, care, provision, forgiveness, and hope we have received through Jesus Christ.

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13a)

Happy anniversary to Nichole & Ralph DiLossi (May 4). Birthday blessings to Eileen Word (May 7), Joe Roach (May 8), David Word (May 9), Dale Myers (May 12), and Nancy Wand (May 14).

Thank you for connecting to our worshipping community and its mission to bless greater Cape May with the Good News of Jesus Christ! We pray that you’re staying safe wherever you are and wherever you go. May God bless you and those you love now and always.
