Our Memorial Day tributes are tragically overshadowed by the school shooting on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas that took the lives of nineteen students and two adults.

“A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more” (Matthew 2:18).

Our entire nation mourns the violence, especially gun violence in the United States. Let’s not grow weary in the urgent and challenging work ahead to address violence and promote peace in our communities and ensure the safety of our children.

As we remember the sacrifices of those who have died serving our country in every branch of our military, we remember those sacrifices were not just for our freedom, but for the freedom of all people around the world! Jesus said, “There is no greater love than this, that one lays down their life for another.” As a faith community, we thank God for freedoms here and around the world.

The message this week centers on Jesus’ Ascension into heaven when he gave the disciples a new job to do. With his ascension, Jesus called us to be “little Christs,” Jesus’ incarnation in the world. That’s a large responsibility. If it were not for Jesus’ promise of Pentecost we will celebrate next Sunday, June 5th, the disciples would have no power to go “into all of the worlds.” Jesus, in his Ascension, promised spiritual power was on its way. Discover how to develop your spiritual staying power this week at Cold Spring Church! Thank you for bringing others with you to our Memorial Day worship experience.

Music and Video Preview

We will enjoy a special Memorial Day countdown video and a video tribute to those who gave their lives in military service. Rev. Larry Moyer will serve as our worship leader and will offer a special solo this week. Following the message, we will sing the hymn, All Hail the Power. This hymn is a declaration of praise, but it’s also much more than that. The words both declare the majesty of Christ and task us with making that majesty known to all. Like many hymns describing the glory of God and the hope that one day all people will see that glory, this hymn alludes to Philippians 2:9-11: “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

We long for this day and declare our hope in its arrival in the text of this hymn. But are we willing to declare that hope to those who have not heard it? The phrase, “Easier said than done” comes to mind here. After we have sung these words of victory and longing, what do we do? Do we act on those words and turn our expectancy into realities? Or do we wait for someone else to do it for us? The fourth stanza of this great hymn declares, “We’ll join the everlasting song….” Everlasting means that we are a part of that song right now – are we willing to lift our voices together to sing more than a hymn, and truly crown our God Lord of all, then tell others the Good News?

Our closing hymn was written by the Rev. Carolyn Gillette in remembrance of the beloved children and adults who died in the school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022. Many of us, as individuals, do not accept violence, keep silent, or clamor for guns. Yet, as a nation, we do these things, and as a nation, God invites us all to repent; we need to turn around and live a different way. All of us are called to do more than sing and pray. Let’s find ways to work for gun safety laws in your community and state. If you’d like to read more about this hymn, click this link to an article from the Presbyterian Mission Agency.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcomed at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

We know how tiresome health protocols can feel. Since our Covid-19 concerns began in March 2020, favorite things remain missing in our lives. We miss entering buildings and socializing without so many health considerations. We miss more frequent and personal contact with family and friends. We miss working in the office, learning in the classroom, actually shopping in stores, traveling more freely, and many of us miss regularly worshipping in person. Understandably, we can feel stuck.

This week’s passage from John 5:1-9 tells about a stuck person, missing the joys and experiences of that “normal life” he imagined that others enjoyed. He missed walking where he wanted, spending time with family and friends, working, learning, and other things we can take for granted. He couldn’t stir himself to get moving and waited for something to change his life. He waited for weeks, then months. Nothing changed. The months turned into years. Then years became decades. He missed the stirring of the healing waters and the changed life he longed for thirty-eight years until Jesus stirred things up.

If you want to get unstuck from missing God’s spiritual abundance, join us for worship on June 22, when we will discover that Jesus is in the business of stirring things up. (And stirring you up is just the beginning. All of us have a role to play in stirring things up for others, too!)

The Rev. Larry Moyer will be singing, A Believer’s Prayer, a song about responding to the Good News by acting like Jesus. Following the message, we will sing the first two verses of Stir Your Church, a hymn about our mission to share and show God’s love for the world. It was composed by Dr. Milburn Price with music by Aubrey Lee Butler. Our sending hymn will be verses 3 and 4 of Stir Your Church.

We like thinking that life is simple. We prefer fewer choices and default to think binary, choosing between two things. Day/night. No/Yes. Either/or. Off/on. Bad/good. Right/wrong. Sacred/secular. Dry/wet. Poor/rich. Democrat/Republican. Foreigner/resident. Female/male. Believer/unbeliever. Dark/light. You can add many more binary examples of your own.

We look at life through simple, safe/dangerous absolutes, even as small children. Consider the things that go bump in the night. That is what scares us when we are children. And the same panic can continue as a fear factor throughout our adult lives. The same fear inspires all those “teenage slasher” movies, zombie stalker sagas, and ghost stories you heard around a campfire. Our need to divide the world into a “safe” (day) and a “scary” (night) is a way to manage the chaos and unexpected outcomes that are part of daily living. We reassure our kids that there is nothing “bad” at night. God created the world and said it was all good. The world of day and the world of the night is the same. The world created by the divine does not know the difference between night and day. God’s presence is always and everywhere, even when the world looks dark and scary, not just when the world looks sunny and bright.

The amazingly diverse world and God’s abiding presence are behind the text in this week’s reading from Acts. Oh, and it’s all about food. Actually, it’s about people who prefer their regional culinary favorites to the exclusion of tasty favorites enjoyed by outsiders. Peter (Jewish) had already been preaching to the Gentiles (non-Jewish) about Jesus. He was criticized by Jewish believers but still cling to their favorite foods (Kosher) and unique Jewish identity (God’s chosen).

This Sunday, let’s join Peter as he was challenged to enjoy an incredible assortment of foods and the people who prepared new meals. He was urged to eat like Jesus. And by enjoying new foods, Peter could begin to love like Jesus, too, who called him to be freed from binary thinking.

Are you hungry to discover new, nutritious spiritual food? Come and get it!

Barbara Cain will be singing a selection from the Glory to God Hymnal, A Grateful Heart. This paraphrase of Psalm 111 lists God’s praiseworthy characteristics. These attributes are organized as an acrostic on the Hebrew alphabet in the original text.

Following the message, our music video is O God of Every Nation. This hymn won first place in a contest co-sponsored by the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada and the National Council of Churches. It was first sung at the Council’s Fifth World Order Conference held in Cleveland, Ohio, in November 1958. If we genuinely believe that God cares for all people, we cannot limit our prayers and songs for peace to the welfare of our own nation, no matter how much we may love it. This challenging text is set to a stirring Welsh tune, named for a hamlet with a prominent Baptist chapel.

Today, our sending hymn is Draw the Circle Wide, written by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Gordon Light in 1994. The words of the refrain to this catchy melody use the metaphor of a circle. Draw the circle wide brings to mind that all points in a circle are the same distance from the center. Jesus Christ is the center of our circle, the center of all life (Colossians 1). When we are in a circle, all are visible to one another – “No one stands alone. We’ll stand side by side.” A circle is drawn when the outside points revolve around the center point—rather than vice versa. Many will say, there shouldn’t be a circle at all. However, if you read the lyrics, you will see that everyone ends up inside the circle. Jesus said, “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself” (John 12:32).

Moms know the voice of their children. Neuroscientists point out that a child knows their mother’s voice first and favors it above all others, listening to it before a child is born. Sounds call us to attention. Hearing moves us to action. Our brains process sounds non-stop, from threatening to calming sounds. We don’t have “earlids.” We must discern the sounds and signals we want to receive from distractions and noise. Listening comes first in life, and to live our very best life, we must hone our listening skills to pay attention to who and what matters. Do you hear me?

This week, let’s visit a sheep herd with Jesus the shepherd, who uses sheep as a metaphor for being faithful disciples. In “Our Listening Life,” Pastor Kevin’s message will offer essential tips for improving our spiritual acoustics because listening is foundational to being fully human, and fully Christ’s.

We will enjoy a special Mother’s Day tribute from Beverly Mate, who will sing God of the Women. Following the message, we will sing Like a Mother Who Has Borne Us, written in 1958 by Daniel Rodney Bechtel, a minister of the United Church of Christ. This text was inspired by how the prophet Hosea describes the parental nature of God’s relationship with Israel (Hosea 11:1–19). The last stanza echoes Christ’s teachings about the love of neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40/Mark 12:29–31) and care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:31–46).

Our sending music video is Speak, O Savior; I Am Listening from Koine Ministries. Anna Sophia (1638-1683) wrote this hymn as a leader in the Lutheran Church in Germany.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

The many appearances of Jesus did not occur where we might at first expect in the Temple courts or in places thought to be associated with religious activity. Instead, Jesus shows up wherever people happen to be. On the Third Sunday of Easter, we join the disciples who are still amazed and energized by the power of the resurrection. In John 21, Jesus met the disciples at the seashore where they were fishing, and Jesus served breakfast! This week, Jesus has prepared a meal for us as we gather at the Lord’s Table. But as the disciples discovered, the spiritual nourishment we enjoy is much more than a simple gesture of hospitality meeting a need for the moment. Pastor Kevin’s message, You Give Them Something To Eat, will encourage and equip you to extend Jesus’ Table to others everywhere you happen to be.

We begin worship with a special countdown video and a stirring soundtrack that depicts the stone rolling away in front of an empty tomb. Throughout our worship we will enjoy special piano accompaniment to help set the spiritual tone during prayers and silent reflections.

Following the message, our video music is Do You Love Me? It will inspire us to consider the opportunity to join Jesus in his mission to fuel the spiritual renewal in others. While the song writer is known only as W.M., thousands around the world have enjoyed this powerfully simple message set to a tune that will likely stay with you all day. Join in the chorus!

Our communion video hymn is Blessed Jesus, Living Bread, written by  American hymnodist Jaroslov J. Vadja. We are nourished and fed as a body of believers as we receive the bread and the cup. We will sing of God providing physical sustenance in mana from heaven to the spiritual substance of God’s Word in the Bible. From Jesus Christ, the living bread, who came to take away the sins of the world as we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Our sending hymn is Will You Let Me Be Your Servant (The Servant Song). The opening and closing stanza expresses the essence of this folk-style song about the mutuality of servant ministry: those who serve must also be willing to be served. This is what Christ intended when he commanded the disciples to “wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14) and in today’s Gospel from John 21, when Jesus commanded the disciples to feed others in Jesus’ name.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Come and enjoy our very special Holy Thursday Communion Worship in our beautiful, historic, Red Brick Church, or on our YouTube channel. Palm Sunday begins Holy Week and each day is an opportunity to retell Jesus’ mission that led him to the cross and the fantastic life-changing, world-changing, resurrection event on Easter Sunday!

Holy Thursday is also called Maundy Thursday. The term Maundy is derived from the Latin word for the “command Jesus’ gave his followers to “love one another as I have loved you.” We all know we are to love others, but love is an action word, a verb, not just a noun. During the Holy Thursday events, Jesus is gathered in the Upper Room for his last supper with his followers. Jesus used that meal and the foot washing to reinforce three ways to put love into action: Hospitality and serving is the mission of Jesus’ followers. The faith community, the host: 1. must take care of their guests. 2. Always serve. Serve others in worship, teaching, dinners, teams, groups, and every interaction with the community. 3. When we serve, our feet will get dirty.

The only way our feet will be dirty is if we go somewhere! So let’s get our feet, and our hands, dirty in serving our community generously! Then, we will look most like Jesus who came to seek and save everyone who has lost their way.

Where will your feet take you today in service to others?!

“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15).

Become spiritually energized by our mission to show God’s love to bless the greater Cape May. Let’s put God’s love into community action together.

Barbara Cain will be singing, He Grew the Tree, words & music by Chuck Lawrence, written in 1982 and recorded by Barbara Mandrell. This is a song with a great reminder of God’s plan for the gift of salvation.

Following the message, we will sing a video hymn traditionally sung as worshippers reenact Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, All Glory Laud and Honor. Though we don’t have city gates to proceed through today, this hymn still acts as a royal hymn of praise and proclamation. Today we praise the “Redeemer, King” because we know just what kind of King he was and is – an everlasting King who reigns not just in Jerusalem, but over the entire earth. What more could we do but praise Jesus with glory, laud, and honor?

In our closing hymn, Hosanna, Loud Hosanna, the first two verses narrate the first Palm Sunday in the past tense, but the third verse shifts to the present tense to emphasize what current singers do and believe. The repeated elements in this anonymous German tune suggest the repetitive patterns in a crowd’s chant.

Everyone likes pleasant aromas. We like to smell good. We buy air fresheners for our cars, put them in shoes, and spray our pets. While some struggle with perfume allergies, consider how much money we spend on fragrances. According to recent data collected by Statista Research, almost 6 million Americans spent $300 or more to smell good last year. That’s a lot of perfume! We spend even more to make our homes smell good! The U.S. air freshener market exceeds $2 billion.

We have all seen the Febreze commercial where they blindfold people and lead them into disgusting, smelly places treated with Febreze. They ask them to say what they smell, which is nothing! Amazing! No matter what your house smells like the right product will not only neutralize the smell, but it will cover it right up, too.

In our Gospel reading, we will join Jesus at a party held in his honor at the home of his best friend, Lazarus. We can imagine how wonderful that meal may have smelled. Spices, oils, the savory food everyone enjoyed. Who doesn’t like the aroma of a great meal being prepared in the kitchen?!

While the meal was underway, out of nowhere, an alternate aroma filled the noses of the party-goers. “What’s that smell?” Turns out, Lazarus’s sister Mary spilled a strong, sweet-smelling perfume on Jesus’ feet wiping them with her hair as an expression of love and gratitude. Shocked, many criticized the extravagant waste of money the perfume represented. But Jesus praised her, reminding all of us that love, generosity, and kindness have an aroma all their own.

This week, we consider what spiritual aromas we represent to our family, friends, and community. Don’t Febreze away the good scents in your life Everywhere we go, people should breathe in the exquisite fragrance of Christ in us! Find out how to “Aromify Your Life In Christ.” Because of Christ in us, we give off a sweet scent rising to God!

Something Beautiful, sung today by Rev Larry Moyer, is a beautiful reminder by Bill and Gloria Gaither about how God can take all our dreams and hopes, which have crumbled into ashes, and turn them into something even better and more beautiful.

Gloria Gaither shares that the story came from their oldest child, Suzanne. One day she was painting and spilled some paint. Vigilantly she tried to clean up the mess. She told Gloria, “Oh, Mommy,” she sobbed, “I tried to make you something beautiful but look! I dropped some paint.” She heaved and caught her breath. “I tried to fix it, but it got worse and now just look!” The idea formed about how God can transform our lives and hearts from our messes.

Following the message, we will enjoy the music video Build My Life, singing of the love of Jesus and the firm foundation we have in His love. In uncertain times this rings especially true, for when we build our lives on Him and fill ourselves with His love, we will never be shaken.

Our Communion video hymn is Blessed Jesus, Living Bread, and please sing along. Our sending hymn is The Lord Went to a Dinner to the tune of O Jesus, I Have Promised.

“…That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:18).

Enjoy sitting with others from greater Cape May as we worship together. We simplified our service and made it even easier to participate, with our Worship Guide and lyric videos displayed on a large screen.
