Will you be my Valentine? —God.

Message Preview

Whether you enjoy or avoid Valentine’s Day, we all have one inescapable need: to feel loved. God is love is a core value of Cold Spring Church. God loves us more than we can imagine. “For God loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” (John 3:16-17). We seek to “love one another with mutual affection…” and to “outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10). We want to belong to something meaningful and feel care. Each of us can fulfill our life’s mission of love that God has given us (Ephesians 2:8-10).

God wants love to increase in our lives. Love that we feel. And love that we give. For many, special days like Valentine’s Day only reinforce that we either feel loved or remind us that we feel unloved. While all of us are unlovable from time to time, we can count on God “lavishing his love on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1).

This week we will be challenged to experience love increasing as we continue to consistently and authentically have a heart for everyone. Always listen and show respect to others. Jesus’ love for the world shows us that we will have heart-to-heart contact with neighbors we might disagree with, with people we may not like, or even fear. Our neighbors, young and old, deserve to experience the love of God. However, to “have a heart” as a follower of Jesus is not easy. It is not automatic. Love will increase as we ask ourselves: “How does our worship and community service show the love of God?” “How could I better show God’s love this week?”

As we embrace love’s increase, we will better reflect and demonstrate God’s love for each other and for greater Cape May because God is love.

Music Preview

We begin with a special Valentine’s Day countdown video. Throughout our worship, we pause for several silent reflections to help us focus on the Spirit’s work in our lives. After our Call to Worship, our gathering song is God Welcomes All. Before the scripture readings we will view a mini-movie titled God So Loved the World.

Following the message we will sing Love Divine, All Loves Excelling. On April 29, 2011, millions of people around the world turned on their televisions to watch one of the most anticipated spectacles of the year: the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The ceremony featured a number of hymns, one of which was “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” a hymn that is both appropriate and seemingly paradoxical for a wedding. This ceremony was so celebrated because it represented the “dream” for romance – a prince finding his princess, true loves coming together, and a couple rising above the odds to be together. This, we argue so easily, is love. And yet this hymn reorients us to see that this beautiful wedding and marriage is only, and can only ever be, a reflection of the Love above all loves. We are only able to love one another because Christ first loved us. God is love, and we are the mirrors and bearers of that love to each other. Let us pray that we would continually be filled with Love, that we might bless each other, and become more and more like Jesus who loves us.

Our sending hymn, God You Give Us Recreation, affirms the balanced life that includes times of creative activity and recreation. Written by the Rev. Carolyn Gillette to the tune of There’s A Wideness To God’s Mercy, it is used by many churches to support Souper Bowl Sunday’s collection of food for the hungry.

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me, all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcome at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

Enjoy sitting with others from greater Cape May as we worship together. We simplified our service and made participation even easier with our Worship Guide and lyric videos displayed on a large screen.

We are getting salty and shiny this week! Find out why.

Message Preview

Cold Spring Church believes everyone deserves to experience God’s love firsthand, and extraordinary transformation can occur when they do. How can you promote this kind of transformation? In our Gospel reading, Jesus combines two powerful metaphors, salt and light, to describe the positive impact Jesus wants us to achieve. First, we are to be super-salty, affecting everything around us. And second, others need to see the bright light we are. Let’s pass the salt and turn on the light, two transformational gestures our neighbors need today. Let’s be involved! Consider:

In what ways can your life be like a spiritual salt shaker?

Where does your light need to be seen today?

We begin with our Winter countdown video. Throughout our worship, we pause for several silent reflections to help us focus on the Spirit’s work in our lives. After our Call to Worship, we sing God Welcomes All. Following the message, we will sing, Lord, the Light of Your Love is Shining (Shine, Jesus Shine). Our closing hymn is Today We Are Called To Be Disciples of the Lord that puts following Jesus in the context of being a faithful witness. It was written by a Presbyterian minister and is set to a lively English melody the arranger first heard in a Sussex village.

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me, all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcome at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

Come and See why John the Baptist and Jesus are like oil and water?

Message Preview

There are two ways to look at the church. One way is to say we are individuals gathered together in a faith community. A second way is to say we are a community of individuals of faith. It sounds like the same idea, but these statements describe different realities. Which are we?

This week we will walk with Jesus as he leaves his hometown of Nazareth to live by the sea. He set up in Capernaum, a busy fishing center on the Sea of Galilee, which was a large freshwater lake. He met lots of individuals because he was building a team. Jesus didn’t go for those who might have been externally motivated, following anyone and everything. Instead, he knew a person’s net worth had to be internally rooted in their spirit. While John the Baptist attracted followers who wanted to do the right thing, Jesus invited those who had the right spirit in them and were open to the future.

  • The more we consider how Jesus selected his team, the more we realize that we are a community first and individuals second.
  • Jesus had only three years in which to save the world. How did he spend those three years?
  • If your life is not going as you need it to, you may need a new team—a new set of connections, a new web of relationships.
  • Remember that you have an incredible impact on many other people. We are not beginning this new year alone.

Let’s present to the community our sentness as disciples of Jesus at Cold Spring Church.

Music Preview

We begin with our Winter countdown video. During several musical reflections, we ask God to keep us open to the Spirit. After our Call to Worship, we sing God Welcomes All. Jayne McDonough will accompany the Rev. Moyer, singing He Is There.

Following the message, we will sing From the Nets of Our Labor (We Will Rise Up And Follow), which evokes the call of the disciples who were fishermen (Matthew 4:18–22/Mark 1:16–20/Luke 5:1–11) while also describing the circumstances of our daily lives through which Jesus continues to summon us in the Refrain to be responsive to the needs and challenges of our community today.

Our closing hymn is Jesus, You Once Called Disciples, sung to the tune There’s A Wideness In God’s Mercy. The lists of disciples found in the gospels are slightly different. This hymn begins with listing twelve disciples, which is found in Matthew. The four gospels together give a complete picture of Jesus calling not only the twelve but also women, other men, and children. The line some are brought up in your way is a reference to 2 Timothy 1:5, where Timothy is described as one raised in the faith by his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, who are the ones who pass on the faith to their family, expressing their sentness as disciples.

We love to combine opposites, create unexpected pairings, or try surprising taste combinations. For example, who doesn’t enjoy Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups? What could be better than Chips and Salsa, Cookies and Cream, or Hummus and Pita? You may even like Chicken and Waffles and Biscuits and Gravy. But have you tried a Mountain Dew Flaming Hot soft drink made with Cheetos? How about Mac & Cheese Ice Cream? You may quickly agree that some opposites don’t work together!

This week we will meet John the Baptist’s disciples, Andrew and Simon Peter. They began their spiritual journey with their mentor, John, who focused on fasting, baptism, and God’s judgment. But when Jesus appeared, they soon realized they couldn’t just combine John’s and Jesus’ teachings. John’s old ways were opposite to Jesus’ new ways kind of like oil and water. Moving forward requires us to respond to Jesus’ invitation to Come and See, like Andrew and Peter. We are getting to what’s next this week on our spiritual journey.

Music Preview

We will sing the traditional carol, We Three Kings, which will stir our spirits this week. as our worship begins and after the message, inviting us to join them on their stargazing journey. Despite the well-loved title, the Scripture identifies the gift-bearing visitors as “magi” meaning scholars, not kings. And there were three gifts, but the actual number of scholars is unspecified. Yet, this carol remains our favorite! We close by singing Lord of All Good as we bring our gifts to God. A pastor wrote this text for a Christmas fair, which perhaps added echoes to the words “gifts” and “give” in the first two stanzas. But no hints are needed to grasp the full meaning of this hymn’s final line as we give ourselves to God and others in caring connections.

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcome at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

What made the three scholars so wise?

Message Preview

This week, is Three Kings Sunday, the 2nd Sunday after Chirstmas. The kings, really scholar scientists, did indeed bring three gifts – gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts are traditionally interpreted to acknowledge Jesus as the King, God, and a foreshadowing of Jesus’ sacrifice, respectively, as depicted in the hymn. Herod slaughtered two-year-olds and younger boys suggesting that Jesus could have been up to two years of age when the gifts were presented to him. Jesus’ family was living in Nazareth by the time the magi arrived. The magi offered their best to Jesus, and we can be inspired to do the same, today.

Find almond blessings for the new year at Cold Spring Church!

Message Preview

What will the new year bring? This week, gather around the Lord’s Table for spiritual nourishment. We will consider how the Spirit led Joseph and his new family to settle in Nazareth, a small town whose name means the place of the branch. The branch of the almond tree is a central metaphor in Scripture for God’s provision for our new year’s journey. “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots, a Branch will bear fruit” (Isaiah 11:1), and “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Bran a King who will reign wisely….” Let’s consider the almond tree and the fruit it brings “as we do what is just and right in the land” (Jeremiah 23:5). Almond blessings ahead!

We begin with our 12 Days of Christmas countdown video that sets the theme for our worship experience. Our hymn, Come, Great God of All the Ages asks us to begin the New Year with God’s guidance, direction, strong faith, and action in the community as we build the church today. We are discovering God’s joy at the edges of Christmas!

Message Preview

This is Christmas Sunday we join with all of creation to sing praises to God. Why, you might ask? Good question. Maybe we don’t feel like singing! Do we feel a bit lost? Uncertain times to be sure. That’s understandable. But God is not lost! We sing praises to God because God is here and will never leave us alone. God with us, Emmanuel. God’s grace is greater than any pandemic, any problem, and God’s abundant forgiveness is greater than all our sin. Sure, we can feel a bit lost from time to time. It’s O.K., though…we’re in good company.

This week’s Gospel recalls the angel’s appearance to the shepherds on the hill who were told to look for a sign of the Messiah’s birth. What sign were they given? God has given us signs, too. Where do the signs of hope and redemption in the Jesus story point for you this Christmas as we look for the Messiah in our midst today?

Music Preview

We begin with our 12 Days of Christmas countdown video that sets the theme for our worship experience. We will also enjoy a special mini-movie at the conclusion of our worship!

We begin worship with O Come, All Ye Faithful. The origins of this 18th century hymn has spread worldwide and is used by many denominations in every language imaginable in both Latin and other versions. Jayne will accompany Beverly Mate singing Born is the Light of the World. Written by composer Sally Deford, she says. “It was Christmas time, and I was looking at a beautiful painting of the Christ Child and His mother. The artist used light to surround Jesus’ head, and to illuminate Mary’s face beautifully, and as I focused on the areas of light, I began to simply describe the painting in this lyric. Thus, the “starlight of silver,” the “halo of gold,” and the radiance of the Baby shining on the face of His mother.

We conclude our worship singing Good Christian Friends, Rejoice. Carols using two languages, like this one dating from at least the 14th century, belong to a special group called “macaronic,” the original languages here being German and Latin. Though the present version is only in English, it is sung to the traditional German folk melody. Let’s rejoice!

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcome at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

We are discovering God’s joy at the edges of Christmas!

Message Preview

Create new memories at Cold Spring Church, making this Christmas, and every Christmas to come, vitally different, better. How? Unwrap God’s gift! Can you imagine a thriving Christmas, not merely surviving it?! This year, let’s take all the best of Christmas’ past and open our arms and spirits to new ways to receive God’s gift of Christmas now? And what is that Gift ready to be opened this year? Jesus. Jesus is the Gift. The Gift that keeps on giving. It’s Jesus moving into our neighborhood, now. Today. Sure, he was born in the past to Mary and Joseph among the animals in crowded Bethlehem. But it’s (also) today that God is with us. Today, God can blossom afresh into our lives.

Music Preview

We begin with our Christmas Eve countdown video that sets the theme for our worship experience. We will also enjoy a special mini-movie.

We will enjoy several Christmas carols that will lift your spirit! We begin with, Joy to the World, a forward looking carol, unlike all the others because it is about the second coming of Jesus. The poem was written in 1719 by Isaac Watts and discovered a century later by Boston music teacher Lowell Mason. It has become the most published Christmas Carol in America.

French shepherds had a Christmas Eve tradition of shouting “Gloria in excelsis Deo” to each other as they watched over their sheep flocks on their respective hills in France. That phrase is the chorus of Angels We Have Heard on High, possibly written as early as 129 AD and known as “The Angel’s Hymn” it became the first Christmas hymn of the Christian church. Away in a Manger is an American written carol that originated among German Lutherans in Pennsylvania about 1885. Jayne McDonough will accompany Barbara Cain singing “The Birth of a King”, a Christmas hymn that was composed by William Harold Neidlinger. This hymn shows the contrast between the humble birth of Jesus and his holiness and the fact that angels sang in praise of this child. The lyrics to “O Little Town of Bethlehem” were written by Phillips Brooks in 1868 after visiting the town of Bethlehem on his trip to the Holy Land two years earlier. Since that time, this song has become a favorite for many people as they celebrate the Christmas season. Our candle-lighting will include singing of “Silent Night” first performed in German in 1818, with the young priest & lyric writer, Joseph Mohr on guitar and singing with Franz Gruber, the choir director who wrote the melody.

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcome at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

We are discovering God’s joy at the edges of Christmas!

This fourth week of Advent is about experiencing our Christmas DNA in God’s glory. We have planned a beautiful 4th Sunday of Advent, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Sunday worship experience ahead! All the signs point to the unwrapping of God’s present to the world! This Christmas, God can empower us to live our very best selves. Or, sure, we can remain stuck in Christmas’ past, repeating fine traditions but not learning and overhearing the Greatest Story Ever Told, but not letting the radical Good News transform our life. God Is With Us, Emanuel (Matthew 1:23), as God’s emerging future unfolds with our every step.

We begin with our Advent countdown that sets the theme for our worship experience. Jayne McDonough will accompany Rev. Moyer singing “Will You Come to the Manger”.  After the message, the congregation can sing along with the video lyrics on the screen, “O Come All Ye Faithful.” From its Roman Catholic origins, this 18th-century hymn has spread worldwide by many denominations in both Latin and local language versions. Once popular with a wide range of hymn texts, this tune is now firmly associated with this Christmas text from which it is named.

Our sending hymn, “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear,” will be played on the organ. The “it” of the first line of this text by a Unitarian minister does not refer to the birth of Jesus, but to “that glorious song of old,” the angelic tidings of peace on earth. The restored third stanza laments how often the noise of human strife has obscured that message.

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcome at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

Enjoy sitting with others from greater Cape May as we worship together. We simplified our service and made participation even easier with our Worship Guide and lyric videos displayed on a large screen.
