Come and See why John the Baptist and Jesus are like oil and water?

Message Preview

There are two ways to look at the church. One way is to say we are individuals gathered together in a faith community. A second way is to say we are a community of individuals of faith. It sounds like the same idea, but these statements describe different realities. Which are we?

This week we will walk with Jesus as he leaves his hometown of Nazareth to live by the sea. He set up in Capernaum, a busy fishing center on the Sea of Galilee, which was a large freshwater lake. He met lots of individuals because he was building a team. Jesus didn’t go for those who might have been externally motivated, following anyone and everything. Instead, he knew a person’s net worth had to be internally rooted in their spirit. While John the Baptist attracted followers who wanted to do the right thing, Jesus invited those who had the right spirit in them and were open to the future.

  • The more we consider how Jesus selected his team, the more we realize that we are a community first and individuals second.
  • Jesus had only three years in which to save the world. How did he spend those three years?
  • If your life is not going as you need it to, you may need a new team—a new set of connections, a new web of relationships.
  • Remember that you have an incredible impact on many other people. We are not beginning this new year alone.

Let’s present to the community our sentness as disciples of Jesus at Cold Spring Church.

Music Preview

We begin with our Winter countdown video. During several musical reflections, we ask God to keep us open to the Spirit. After our Call to Worship, we sing God Welcomes All. Jayne McDonough will accompany the Rev. Moyer, singing He Is There.

Following the message, we will sing From the Nets of Our Labor (We Will Rise Up And Follow), which evokes the call of the disciples who were fishermen (Matthew 4:18–22/Mark 1:16–20/Luke 5:1–11) while also describing the circumstances of our daily lives through which Jesus continues to summon us in the Refrain to be responsive to the needs and challenges of our community today.

Our closing hymn is Jesus, You Once Called Disciples, sung to the tune There’s A Wideness In God’s Mercy. The lists of disciples found in the gospels are slightly different. This hymn begins with listing twelve disciples, which is found in Matthew. The four gospels together give a complete picture of Jesus calling not only the twelve but also women, other men, and children. The line some are brought up in your way is a reference to 2 Timothy 1:5, where Timothy is described as one raised in the faith by his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, who are the ones who pass on the faith to their family, expressing their sentness as disciples.

Whatever your religious affiliation, or none at all, we all hear Jesus say, “Come to me, all who are overburdened, and find rest for your soul!” Everyone is welcome at Cold Spring Church. Yes, everyone!

Enjoy sitting with others from greater Cape May as we worship together. We simplified our service and made participation even easier with our Worship Guide and lyric videos displayed on a large screen.
