Energize your life and discover the crazy love of Jesus!

You don’t have to use your words to convey meaning. We reveal our thoughts and feelings through body language, facial expressions, and hand gestures. And some of these gestures can be offensive and hurtful, too. We all know the hand signs when we want to sarcastically signal that someone is out of their mind, crazy. You put your finger to your temple and twirl it a couple of times. The modern world didn’t like “circles.” We were all taught to “think straight,” and to “straighten up,” and to “color within the lines.” We like to walk a straight path; after all, it’s the shortest distance between two points, right?

But sometimes, straight lines are not the goal. Think of the benefits of a Japanese Zen Garden (you may have a small garden on your desk). The garden’s owner shapes the sand in mostly wavy contours and circles that bring a sense of clarity, calm, and mindfulness. Perhaps you have walked a prayer labyrinth. You won’t find many straight lines! Why? Because organic, creative, and spiritual life is rarely rigid, linear, or predictable. Think about that!

“Crazy” is a word that denotes nothing scientific. It was one of the Apostle Paul’s favorite words. The word “moros,” we mistakenly translate as “fool,” would be better translated as “crazy,” or “moron.” Paul says that the cross of Jesus is just crazy talk, and those who follow Jesus are crazy, too (2 Corinthians 5:13)!

Crazy is a word that has been used to define Einstein and Picasso, Galileo, and Martin Luther. Harriet Tubman, Marie Currie, Susan B. Anthony, and Martin Luther King, Jr., likewise. All were considered crazy. Five years ago, we would have thought crazy about creating a Messenger RNA vaccine that doesn’t risk people getting sick from the actual virus. Crazy has saved lives!

At one time or another, “crazy” has been used to define almost every social reformer, freedom fighter, inventor, scientist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and trailblazers in business, music, art, and all the sciences. In Steve Jobs’ acclaimed advertising campaign, he praised the innovators and revolutionaries, the so-called misfits, rebels, troublemakers, and those that “have no respect for the status quo.” The Crazy Ones changed the world for the better.

Jesus was no exception to being called crazy. “When Jesus’ family heard what he was doing, they thought he was crazy and went to get him under control” (Mark 3:21). This week, we will consider The Crazy Love of Jesus in Pastor Kevin’s message from Mark 3:20-35. Jesus upends the dominant patriarchal family constrictions of his time, replacing it with a new, truly crazy, understanding of God’s kingdom.

As we observe Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifice our greater community has made in ensuring our freedom. We have planned a very special Memorial Day and Trinity Sunday worship on May 30! As we eagerly anticipate diminishing social restrictions and increasing numbers of vaccinated people, God is present with us, offering hope as we adjust to a new normal. But what is normal? Can we choose better than normal? For followers of Jesus, we must not become so comfortable that we ignore the unpredictable movement of the Spirit! Our neighbors, nation and the world need hope, too. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, life is far from predictable! In fact, we can choose the abundant Spirit-Life and be amazed!

We remember the sacrifices of those who have died serving our country, let’s remember that our country sacrificed not only for our nation’s freedoms, but we have always sacrificed so that others around the world could experience freedom, too. God loves you more than you know. Jesus said, “There is no greater love than this, that one lays down their life for another.” God so loved the world!

What do you remember about this Memorial Day? Give thanks to God for freedoms here at home and around the world. For freedom in Christ! God is shining on you! That is something to remember every day!

Thinkable for this week: Sometimes, we may think God is frowning on us. But the Good News is that in Jesus Christ, God’s love, forgiveness, and hope set us free!

  1. How do you experience God’s smile?
  2. What new blessings do you want to thank God for right now?
  3. In what ways does your life shine on others? What will you do today to let your light shine even more!

Connect to the flame of the Spirit during the season of Pentecost at Cold Spring Church.

What does Pentecost mean? An even better question to consider is, What does Pentecost mean to you? The whole point of Pentecost is that when the flame of the Spirit descended upon the followers of Jesus, the flame never went out. Pentecost is not just the Church’s birthday, it’s the launch of a movement of the people of God to make a difference in the world, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord‘s favor, which is always now!

How do we know the Spirit is moving? You can’t see the Spirit, right? But you can see what the Spirit does, at work in and around us! Each of us uniquely demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. God’s Spirit is moving throughout the world and since Pentecost, through the lives of those who follow Jesus. As we grow and transform, we will make a difference in the world in ways that only the Church can deliver. Here in Cape May, New Jersey, and in every city in America, throughout the world. Connect to the flame of the Spirit at Cold Spring Church.

Become a part of Jesus’ cosmic story this week at the Red Brick Church. Enlarge your spiritual world and be better equipped to enjoy God and connect to God’s earthly and cosmic mission which includes you and me! We will start with prayer.

While we call the “Our Father” the Lord’s Prayer, it actually wasn’t. Jesus taught that prayer, but it was to be a model of prayer for the disciples of Jesus. (Idea: When you say the prayer during worship today, think: this is the disciple’s prayer, my prayer, so make it yours!) Jesus told his followers that God sent him to be in the world, and that Jesus was sending us into the world, too. What did Jesus mean when he said to be all in? To help us explore our faith and ramp-up our mission we will consider the expanding group of disciples after Jesus ascended into heaven. Consider words from Colossians 1 that the earthly Jesus has a cosmic role!

“Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers–all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col. 1:15-17).

To prepare for our worship together think about your responses to these questions: What’s the difference between being an astronomer and an astronaut? How do these metaphors help you understand being “all in” as a follower of Jesus?

You’ll want to bring along a few traveling companions to worship with you, too!

This Sunday, we commemorate Mother’s Day and celebrate God’s love when Jesus’ chose us! (Special music, message, and a gift for our in-person worshippers.) Honoring motherhood has a long history from the earliest of times. Our Mother’s Day tradition is mainly attributed to Anna Jarvis. She worked tirelessly honoring a mother’s sacrifice in caring for children following her own mother’s death on the second Sunday of May in 1905. In 1908, thousands of people attended a Mother’s Day event financed by Presbyterian and Philadelphia department store owner John Wanamaker at one of his retail stores in Philadelphia. It didn’t take long for Mother’s Day celebrations to become a commercial success when florists, greeting card manufacturers, and retail stores joined in its promotion.

God knows our hearts and our heartaches this Mother’s Day. As others rightfully celebrate the joy and love of the mothers in their lives, this day, for some of us, is a sad reminder of a mother’s absence in our lives. If we buy flowers today, it may only be to place them by a graveside. If we buy a card today, it could only be in hopes of knowing our mothers one day. Some simply miss our mom’s hugs prevented by travel and health restrictions, something Facebook or FaceTime connections just can’t replace. Others grieve strained relationships. Many will light a candle in honor of a mother who is not locally present or who has passed, long ago or more recently. For some, this Mother’s Day will be joyful. Others are tearful. For some wistful, or it will just be a day that feels empty.

But God comforts us like a mother. God’s Spirit meets us where we are. Let’s honor the mothers that we knew, those we are blessed to know, or the mothers that we hope for. God’s love shared in our hearts and with others can remind us of the abundant life, love, care, provision, forgiveness, and hope we have received through Jesus Christ.

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13a)

Happy anniversary to Nichole & Ralph DiLossi (May 4). Birthday blessings to Eileen Word (May 7), Joe Roach (May 8), David Word (May 9), Dale Myers (May 12), and Nancy Wand (May 14).

Everybody loves food. To be our healthiest best, we have lots of menu plans from which to choose from Classic to Flexitarian, Low Carb, Pescatarian, Vegetarian, Paleo, Keto, Vegan, and so many more! But we are spiritual beings that require nourishing spiritual food, too. In our Good News message this week we find Jesus preparing a meal on the beach for a boatload of hungry fishermen saying, “Come and have breakfast!”

In many of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus, food was a central part of the experience people enjoyed, and this week’s readings are no exception! You’re invited to worship online or in-person and come for spiritual food as we gather the Lord’s Table. Whatever your faith tradition or no tradition at all, you will find nourishment for your spirit. Are you hungry? Let’s take time for living the abundant life and feed the spirit with the Spirit at Cold Spring Church. This week, eat the Breakfast of Spiritual Champions!

Please join us this Sunday at 10:30 in person or online. Discover the spiritual resources you need to live in Christ’s revolutionary, resurrection power!

Do you have a pet? If you do, you know it is a big responsibility. You must be willing to take care of it. You have to feed it and make sure it has plenty of water. You must keep it clean and take it to the veterinarian when it is sick. You have to make sure your pet is kept safe and, if it wanders off and gets lost, you go and look for it and bring it back home.

Our pandemic restricted stay-at-home lifestyle this past year has provided an extraordinary bonding time with our pets and companion animals. Interactions and positive physical contact with pets not only provide physiological and psychological benefits. Science tells us that our time with trusted pets releases biochemicals that can boost our immune system and enhance health and well-being. Wow!

Jesus loved animals and used experiences with common animals like dogs, donkeys, and sheep as metaphors in his teaching. Sheep were valued not only as a source of nutrition on their menu, or a source of warm wool clothing. Almost every family loved sheep and kept sheep as pets, too.

But sheep don’t take care of themselves very well. They need someone to watch over them and deliver care. They need someone to protect them from harm. That’s why the shepherd role was highly regarded in Jesus’ time. Like front-line workers today, shepherds often risked their lives to protect sheep and sacrificed their personal safety to keep their flock from threats.

Family and friends provide comfort, and we manage to take care of ourselves most of the time. But we are created to thrive in mind, body, and spirit, as spiritual beings, we need spiritual resources. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd.” Jesus knows his sheep, that’s you and me. Jesus wants his sheep to experience abundant life. Jesus said, like a good shepherd, he was even willing to lay down his life for his sheep. Which he did.

Are you looking for a shepherd? Search over. Find out more at Cold Spring Church, this week and every week.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me–just as the Father knows me and I know the Father–and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:14-15 (NIV)

Please join us this Sunday at 10:30 in person or online and enjoy music, videos, Scripture readings, and an inspiring message to help you take a step forward with the Author of Life (a title given to Jesus in our Scripture reading this week from 1 John.) Our Seven Weeks of Easter continues. While the admonition, “If you see something, say something!” is most associated in airports and public places, Jesus gave his disciples the same message when he said, “You will be my witnesses” (Luke 24:48). Find out what Christ rising in our lives can mean.

Please join us this Sunday at 10:30 in-person or online and enjoy music, videos, Scripture readings, and an inspiring message to help you take a step forward with the Author of Life (a title given to Jesus in our Scripture reading this week from 1 John.) If you see something that inspires you, reminds you of God’s presence, or makes you smile, say something! Another way to share is to snap a pic or video, share your Easter season story on Instagram #ColdSpringChurch, or email hello@coldspringchurch.com. Come as you are and discover the spiritual resources you need to live in Christ’s revolutionary, resurrection power!

Birthday blessings to Lillian Ridgway (19th). Happy anniversary to Charles & Barbara Keister (20th), Nancy and Guy Kessler (20th)!

Thank you for connecting to our worshipping community and its mission to bless greater Cape May with the Good News of Jesus Christ!

Worship Your Way! In-Person, or Online

While we continue to worship online every week, we are excited to welcome all who are able and comfortable to worship in-person in our historic Red Brick Church on Sundays at 10:30 AM. Your safety, health, and wellness are our top priority. West Jersey Presbytery approved our session’s re-opening plan and our pastor, staff, and teams have worked hard to prepare for your arrival. Following the guidance from the CDC and health officials, we have implemented safety protocols and designed an approximately thirty-minute worship experience that will be spiritually energizing and safe for you, your family, and other worshippers.

Dear online worshipping friends: We apologize in advance should our live stream be interrupted by Facebook. We are working with Facebook and the music publishers to honor our music licenses and resolve these disconnect issues. Any interrupted live stream will be re-launched within a minute or two. Please rejoin as soon as we are back! Thank you for your patience. Pre-registration for in-person worship is encouraged but not required to attend worship. If you’d like to worship in person, you may contact the office at 609-884-4065 or email hello@coldspringchurch.com.

Easter worship was such a fantastic event. On Sunday, about 45 in-person and more online celebrated together. But what if you’re just not feeling it? Sure, you recall parts of the Easter story. You remember the palm branches swaying, the children singing, the smell of lilies, colorful eggs, and baskets of candy. Great memories from long ago. But right now? Right now, it feels more like Good Friday than Easter Sunday. It’s O.K. to be where you are, how you are. More than that, Jesus knows that you, no, all of us, from time to time, feel overwhelmed with despair, anxiety, disappointment, and even trauma, not to mention the Pandemic’s continuing devastating effects on ourselves, our family, and friends. The Good News is that God meets us where we are and promises us hope.

Come as you are and join with others like you on Sunday at 10:30 AM, in-person or online, and discover spiritual resources you need to breathe, to move freely. At your own pace. In your way. You may be surprised to know that after Easter, Jesus’ disciples felt a lot like you think right now. They were kind of stuck. Then, each in their own time and as they were comfortable, understood the pierced hands and side of Jesus. Because Jesus lives, they knew they could live, too.

Our Seven Weeks of Easter continues this week. Enjoy music, videos, Scripture readings, and an inspiring message to help you take a step toward a living hope! See you Sunday!

We begin worship with a special countdown video and a stirring soundtrack that depicts the stone rolling away in front of an empty tomb. Throughout our Grand Celebration, Jayne McDonough will offer special piano accompaniment to help set the spiritual tone during prayers and silent reflections. After the Pastor’s welcome, let’s be open to God’s Spirit during a meditative video arrangement of Because He Lives. Special music will be offered by Barbara Cain singing, Then Came the Morning. Following the message, we can say/sing along with the video lyrics to the Easter favorite, Christ the Lord Is Risen Today. An Easter mini-movie will challenge us, He’s Still Risen, just before we receive the benediction. Please invite your friends to join you for our Grand Easter Celebration this Sunday!

Easter Sunday morning changed everything when the followers of Jesus proclaimed the truth that “Christ is risen!” What a week! But what was it that brought the change? Remarkably, when we consider the timeline of Jesus’ 3½ years of teaching, miracles, and activities recorded in the Bible, it spans only three weeks! No wonder John writes, “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written (John 21:25). But of those three weeks, one is Holy Week. Think about that. Fully one-third of Jesus’ complete story captures events from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday when the stone was rolled away, revealing an empty tomb!

You’ll want to join us for our Grand Easter Celebration! Enjoy music, videos, Scripture readings, the Lord’s Table, and an inspiring message to help you discover that it was more than a philosopher’s stone that rolled away!
