We gather together At the Lord’s Table this Sunday. Start the new year by seizing your future as God invites us forward! Our in-person worshippers will be provided pre-packaged communion cups, which on-line worshippers may request by contacting the office. Or, the bread can be of your choosing. For the cup, you may use grape juice or wine, or water, remembering that Christ is the Living Water for all.

What will you be focusing on in the new year? This week, we gather around the Lord’s Table and consider how Jesus is not just the Light of THE World, but the Light of OUR FUTURE, illuminating our journey ahead. Let’s focus on Jesus and the light he brings to us!

Music Preview

John Wesley Work, Jr., may not have originated the spiritual “Go, Tell It on the Mountain,” but he can take credit for the fact that we still sing it every Christmas. As the son of a church choir director, Work grew up in Nashville loving music. Even though he earned his Master’s in Latin and went on to teach ancient Latin and Greek, his first love continued to be music, and he went on to become the first African-American collector of spirituals rooted in the Black experience. This proved to be a daunting task for Work because they were passed down orally and very few were written down. But Work proved up to the challenge, publishing his first song book six years later. It was in this second volume that “Go, Tell It on the Mountain” first appeared. The original singers of the song fulfilled the same important task the angels gave the shepherds that first Christmas night outside of Bethlehem, proclaiming, “that Jesus Christ is born!” And thanks to John Wesley Work, so can we. We end our service with our communion favorite, “The Blessing.”

Worship Preview

This is the first Sunday after Christmas, and the last worship service of 2021. In these still uncertain pandemic times, we join with all of creation to sing praises to God. Why, you might ask? Good question. Maybe we don’t feel like singing! Do we feel a bit lost? Sure. That’s understandable. But God is not lost! We sing praises to God because God is here and will never leave us alone. God with us, Emmanuel. God’s grace is greater than any pandemic, any problem, and God’s abundant forgiveness is greater than all our sin. Sure, we can feel a bit lost from time to time. It’s O.K., though…we’re in good company.

This week’s Gospel tells about frantic parents looking for their child! What could be more terrifying than loosing a child? But in this story, it was Jesus who was feared lost! Jesus, lost! What would Joseph and Mary do? Find out in Pastor Kevin’s message, “Finding What Is Not Lost,” from Luke 2:41-52. Like Joseph and Mary, we will find Jesus in (un)expected places.

Music Preview

We begin worship with O Come, All Ye Faithful. The origins of this 18^th century hymn has spread worldwide and is used by many denominations in every language imaginable in both Latin and other versions. We conclude our worship singing Good Christian Friends, Rejoice. Carols using two languages, like this one dating from at least the 14th century, belong to a special group called “macaronic,” the original languages here being German and Latin. Though the present version is only in English, it is sung to the traditional German folk melody. Let’s rejoice! Come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

Create new memories at Cold Spring Church, making this Christmas, and every Christmas to come, vitally different, better. How? Unwrap God’s gift! Can you imagine a thriving Christmas, not merely surviving it?! This year, let’s take all the best of Christmas’ past and open our arms and spirits to new ways to receive God’s gift of Christmas now? And what is that Gift ready to be opened this year? Jesus. Jesus is the Gift. The Gift that keeps on giving. It’s Jesus moving into our neighborhood, now. Today. Sure, he was born in the past to Mary and Joseph among the animals in crowded Bethlehem. But it’s (also) today that God is with us. Today, God can blossom afresh into our lives.

Music Preview

We will enjoy several Christmas carols that will lift your spirit! We begin with, Joy to the World, a forward looking carol, unlike all the others because it is about the second coming of Jesus. The poem was written in 1719 by Isaac Watts and discovered a century later by Boston music teacher Lowell Mason. It has become the most published Christmas Carol in America.

French shepherds had a Christmas Eve tradition of shouting “Gloria in excelsis Deo” to each other as they watched over their sheep flocks on their respective hills in France. That phrase is the chorus of Angels We Have Heard on High, possibly written as early as 129 AD and known as “The Angel’s Hymn” it became the first Christmas hymn of the Christian church.

Away in a Manger is an American written carol that originated among German Lutherans in Pennsylvaniá about 1885.

Composer Sally DeFord says she wrote “When Mary Sang Her Lullaby” because she loved the symbolism in using Mary’s lullaby as a symbol for the coming of Christ as the Babe of Bethlehem, who would indeed “comfort all the world”.

The lyrics to “O Little Town of Bethlehem” were written by Phillips Brooks in 1868 after visiting the town of Bethlehem on his trip to the Holy Land two years earlier. Since that time, this song has become a favorite for many people as they celebrate the Christmas season.

Our candlelighting will include singing of “Silent Night” first performed in German in 1818, with the young priest & lyric writer, Joseph Mohr on guitar and singing with Franz Gruber, the choir director who wrote the melody.

Come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

This fourth week of Advent is moving us closer to Christmas! We have planned a beautiful 4th Sunday of Advent, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Sunday worship experience ahead! All the signs point to the unwrapping of God’s present to the world! Once you open God’s Christmas gift, nothing remains the same. The message today is titled, ”How God Wraps Your Christmas Present.”

This Christmas, God can empower us to live our very best selves. Or, sure, we can remain stuck in Christmas’ past, repeating fine traditions but not learning and overhearing the Greatest Story Ever Told, but not letting the radical Good News transform our life. God Is With Us, Emanuel (Matthew 1:23), as God’s emerging future unfolds with our every step.

What kind of gifts do you give? Memories of Christmas’ past can help you unpack Christmas’ meaning. In these pandemic times, we must creatively refashion and reset these essential activities. New ways to gather safely with family and friends are a must. Seasonal food favorites. Unique ornaments and events. Christmas movies and holiday music. Christmas Eve candlelight worship. The traditions go on and on. Sometimes the past familiar traditions can overwhelm us as we miss loved ones, reminisce about by-gone days, or feel a bit lonely during Christmas. Now is a great time to remember that from that First Noel, Christmas was always about God’s wrapping Christmas gifts. All things become new…again. Once you open God’s Christmas gift, nothing remains the same. Invite others to join you this Christmas week!

Get ready as we proclaim God’s story that a Jew from Nazareth who lived briefly, died violently, rose unexpectedly, and was God in the flesh, calls us to follow, transformed in mind, body, and spirit!

Music Preview

We will enjoy a beautiful solo by the Rev. Larry Moyer with Jayne McDonough on the grand piano titled, “Will You Come to the Manger?” After the message, the congregation can sing along with the video lyrics on the screen, “O Come All Ye Faithful.” From its Roman Catholic origins, this 18th-century hymn has spread worldwide by many denominations in both Latin and local language versions. Once popular with a wide range of hymn texts, this tune is now firmly associated with this Christmas text from which it is named.

Our sending hymn, “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear,” will be played on the organ. The “it” of the first line of this text by a Unitarian minister does not refer to the birth of Jesus, but to “that glorious song of old,” the angelic tidings of peace on earth. The restored third stanza laments how often the noise of human strife has obscured that message.

This third week of Advent is all about “doing” what we believe in joy. We will hear Isaiah’s prophetic message for all people to rejoice. And with the crowds surrounding the prophet John by the Jordan, we can respond each in our own way to that proclamation of joy. This week, find hope and encouragement to live your very best life, the abundant Life that Jesus promised you!

Music Preview

Our video hymn today is The First Nowell. “Nowell” is the English form of the French “noel,” a shout of joy formerly used at Christmas (as in Chaucer’s “Franklin’s Tale”), a clue that the word is older than its first printing. It may have Latin and French roots related to “born,” ” (natus / né) as well to “news” (nova / nouvelle).

We close with Angels From the Realms of Glory played on the organ. This familiar carol was first published as a poem in the Christmas Eve 1816 issue of a newspaper the author edited in Sheffield, England. The tune name celebrates the location of a prominent Presbyterian Church in London, sometimes called the “Presbyterian cathedral.”

Gathering At the Lord’s Table

Let’s meet at the Table of Peace! Our in-person worshippers will be provided pre-packaged communion cups, which on-line worshippers may request by contacting the office. Or, you choose the bread. For the cup, you may use grape juice or wine, or water, remembering that Christ is the Living Water for all.

The Second Sunday of Advent tells us to prepare for something fantastic that is coming. News that’s worthy of being shouted from the mountaintops, or posted to your Instagram account, or texted to a friend. There is nothing ordinary about the preparatory days of Advent that lead us to Christmas, literally “Christ’s birth.” We will flesh out God’s story as we hear the prophet Malachi tell of a messenger to come. Five hundred years later, John the Baptizer fulfilled the prophecy and prepared the way for Jesus.

Christianity is a religion, a relationship with God through Christ, that is materialistic. It is not materialistic in a consumerism way, but uniquely different from all other religions in that it forever connects divinity with humanity. Jesus’ incarnation transformed the transcendent into the imminent when the Word and Spirit became flesh and blood. Christmas tells of this incarnation, literally God’s “fleshing out” when the infinite took finite form.

The first commandment strictly prohibits making representations of Almighty God. Moses knew that nobody could look upon the face of God and live. Because of Christ, now we can! But it’s okay if God reveals an image of God, and God did just that in the incarnation of Jesus.

This week we proclaim that matter matters. There is no division between spirit and matter for those who follow Jesus. We do not somehow care about the spiritual life without caring about physical life, too. We cannot separate what God made inseparable in Jesus Christ. That’s fantastic news!

Music Preview

Our first hymn today is Hark the Herald Angels Sing. The current tune for this carol was composed by Mendelssohn, who himself was a Messianic Jew. It is from the second chorus of a cantata he wrote in 1840. The cantata commemorates Johann Gutenberg and the invention of the printing press. Mendelssohn strictly warned that his composition had a purely secular purpose. However, in 1856, long after both Wesley and Mendelssohn were dead, Dr. William Cummings ignored both of their wishes and joined the lyrics by Wesley with the music by Mendelssohn for the first time. As a result, the modern version of this beautiful, gospel-centered carol was born, and generations have been singing it ever since.

We close with Go, Tell It On The Mountain. The refrain theme comes from Old Testament passages in which praise to God for his acts of deliverance. Acclamations are shouted, both literally and metaphorically, from the mountaintops (Isa. 42:11). While the three stanzas tell the essence of the Christmas story, the refrain underscores the missionary impetus of the Christian church: “As you go, make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). The “Go, tell,” which initially applied to the singers caroling on the university campus, signals us to leave the comfortable confines of Christian worship and “Go, tell” the message of Christ’s redemption to the whole world.

Message Preview

This week is the first week of Advent as the lectionary and liturgical cycle reboots. Advent is the time for getting ready. Anticipating what is to come—watching and waiting for the promised Messiah— Jesus. Why a reboot? Many might surmise that since Jesus has already come, that’s old news. But the Good News is not just about a one-time, distantly past event. Jesus’ birth is an event from the past, but each year we retell and relive the Greatest Story Ever Told because that one event changed everything!

You will want to worship with us on the First Sunday of Advent when we hear the prophet proclaim, “The Lord is our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 33:16). Advent 202 is the time to realize that God is still doing marvelous things and continues to enter and transform our lives. When Jesus “moved into our neighborhood” (John 1:14), he moved in for good! Jesus is not historically bound to the past, but is in a dynamic relationship to be enjoyed right now, and into the future, too!

During the four weeks of Advent that culminates on Christmas Eve, we watch and wait for Jesus’ spiritual reboot of our lives, transforming our world, our communities, and lives. How will we experience hope? By watching and waiting, actively engaging, and being open to the Spirit of Christ today, this Advent season.

In our Gospel reading from Luke 21:25-36, we get a hint of the radical nature of Christ’s entering our world. We watch in hope—(What are you watching for during these unprecedented times?)… and wait in hope— (What are you waiting for? Whom are you waiting on?). If you were waiting for a sign, this is it!

Music and Video Preview

We begin Advent singing O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, a solemn and delicate carol originally written in Latin with a title of ‘Veni, Veni, Emmanuel’ about 1710. The English translation of the Advent carol came about in 1851 when the priest and scholar John Mason Neale’s version was featured in the pages of The Hymnal Noted – a key text in the history of hymns collected by hymnal documenter Thomas Helmore. Let’s join in watching and waiting for the promised Messiah, Emmanuel (meaning God is here). Our worship experience concludes with Come Thou Long Expected Jesus. With it’s opening invitation “Come,” this hymn sounds the note of hope and anticipation that characterizes the Advent season (from the Latin adventus “coming”). Its blending of memory and hope helps us to give voice to our present faith as we stand between the past and the future.

Have you ever felt at the end of your rope?! Sure, we all have. The rope is a familiar metaphor for many of life’s experiences and activities. Sometimes we can feel like we’re getting all Tied Up, or walking a Tightrope just to get through our day, or wistfully longing for the simple joy of Jumping Rope as a child in the neighborhood. Remember playing Tug-of-war on the field? It may have Ben a while since you enjoyed the Rope Swing in your backyard. Ropes can also keep us on the path and guide us in the best direction.

Our energizing message this week is from Mark 13 and Hebrews 4 and you are invited to consider Jesus’ promise to be with us in our present and our future. While visions of the “end times” may result in some anxieties, the end times is not at the end of our rope. Rather, Jesus promises to be faithful to us… “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23). Even when Jesus envisioned the future destruction of Herod’s Great Temple, do not fear. Even the uncertainties ahead can result in normal fears, God promises to stand with us in our fear, to tie us as with a safe and secure rope, not only to himself, but to one another. Sure, we may not immediately correlate encouragement and safety to former church experiences, but at Cold Spring Church, we not only stand on the promises of God, we stand on the promises of God together.

Did you know that the the Latin root of the word “religion” is re-ligare, which means to be roped to a yoke? Many monastic orders still require the monk to tie a rope around his waist. It’s not a rope that keeps the cassock from falling. It was a symbol of God’s promises. The rope symbolized that we are all bound together in ropes of hope and faith and love. Find Ropes of Living Hope this week at Cold Spring Presbyterian Church.

Music and Video Preview

We begin Thanksgiving week in gratitude and praise, Despite its familiar Thanksgiving associations, our first hymn is Come Ye Thankful People, Come. The real concern of this text is to recall the harvest imagery Jesus used to describe the fulfillment of God’s sovereignty. The tune name commemorates the royal chapel where the composer was organist for forty-seven years. Sing along with our special video lyrics!

Leading into the Message for Kids, we will view a special video reminding us that we are not bound by our circumstances, asking God to embolden us to be a people of living hope in the midst of struggle and challenge, locally and around the world. Let’s be carriers of hope!

Just before the Benediction, we sing Now Thank We All Our God. Although this hymn is often used on festive occasions, its first two stanzas had much humbler beginnings: they originated as a family table prayer during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). These words have been associated with this tune and later with Thanksgiving in the United States.

Worship Preview

We welcome back to the pulpit, ruling elder Mr. Norris Clark while Pastor Kevin and Melissa are on vacation. After our energizing Countdown Video, our first hymn is O Lord My God (How Great Thou Art). This tuneful retelling of the salvation story began in Swedish and was translated into German and Russian before reaching its English form. Truly an international hymn of praise! Despite such linguistic and musical revisions, it continues to be a meaningful source of comfort to many people.

Our second hymn is Blessed Assurance. Sometimes this prolific 19th-century hymn writer Fanny Jane Crosby wrote texts for others to set, and sometimes she created words for music others had composed. This text was of the second kind, and the resulting close fit between words and music has made them both popular and inseparable.

November 7th promises to be a fantastic Sunday! Why? Because we are celebrating both sacraments, the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and the Sacrament of Baptism. The first sacrament invites the community of faith to gather at the Table to nourish the Spirit. As with the Lord’s Supper, Baptism is a sign and act of God’s self-giving, by which God’s grace is made available to us. The sacraments give a distinctive shape to our worship and are the primary signs of the covenant of grace. As the faith community gathers with the family at the Font, we affirm the promises of God. And we promise to nurture the parents and the child presented for baptism.

Throughout Scripture, the litmus test for loyalty as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ is this: How do we treat the poor and vulnerable? How do we care for the least of these? Our Gospel text from Mark 12 tells when Jesus noticed who dropped two small coins in the offering box. The giver was a poor woman compared to wealthy religious leaders who “devoured widows’ houses.” Jesus was on a mission to end a corrupt system, not merely draw attention to the widow as an example to follow. Instead, we will see that Jesus wants us to notice the oppressed, neglected, vulnerable, and those who have nothing left. We will discover why this woman was poor and vulnerable how God calls us to make decisions rooted in grace and gratitude and our two sacraments of Table and Font.

Our lyric video hymn, Help Us Accept Each Other, was written by Frederik Herman Kaan (1929-2009), born in the Netherlands. He wrote this hymn on acceptance in 1974 after reading a Bible-study article written by Jacki Mattonen, a member of the executive committee on the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. It was published in the World Council of Churches hymnal, Cantate Domino (1974), when it was the perfect length to complete the available space left before printing and has become widely used in community services.

Blessed Jesus, Living Bread sings of the many ways we are nourished and fed as a body of believers. From God providing physical sustenance in the Old Testament in mana from heaven to the spiritual substance of God’s Word in the Bible.
